Nominating petitions for the Nov. 3 city elections must be filed at the Greene County auditor’s office by Thursday, Sept. 17, at 5 pm. The term of every mayor in the county will expire as well as several city council members.
Nominating petitions are available at the office of each city clerk, in the county auditor’s office, or on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website at https://sos.iowa.gov
In Jefferson, the four-year term of mayor Craig Berry will expire, as well as the four-year terms of council members Lisa Jaskey and Shannon Black. Jaskey was elected from District 2 and Black holds an at-large seat. The council member from District 2 must reside in that district, although voting is at large. To see the map of council districts, click here. A minimum of 25 signatures in needed for nomination. Black is not running for re-election.
All other mayors serve two-year terms. All city council members serve four-year terms.
In Scranton, the term of mayor BJ Wright will expire and the terms of council members Cole Gustoff, Ethel Subbert and Orvie Umbaugh. Scranton voters will also have a question on the ballot altering the number of library trustees and terms of office.
In Churdan, the term of mayor Joleen Killeen will expire. The terms of council members Steve Killeen, Andrew Nygaard and Roger Olson will expire. Also on the ballot are the seats to which Jason Stauffer and Ann Meyer were appointed to fill vacancies.
In Dana, the term of mayor Jack Pederson will expire. The terms of council members Mandy Sims and Jeremiah Pedersen will expire. Also on the ballot will be the seat to which Christopher Vargas was appointed to fill a vacancy.
In Paton, the term of mayor Steve Burrell will expire, as will the terms of council members Eric Geisler, Casey Kaufman and Judy Wilson.
In Rippey, the term of mayor Daniel Brubaker and the terms of council members Ned Johnston, Richard Liebich and Jon Allen will expire.
In Grand Junction, the term of mayor Gerold Herrick and the terms of council members Alan Robinson and Meladee Graven will expire.
The number of signatures needed for nomination is determined by population. Ten qualified signatures are needed in Scranton, Churdan, Paton, Rippey and Grand Junction. Five qualified signatures are needed in Dana.
